Hello strangers, I see it’s been about 2 and a half years since I dropped off the face of the earth. Sorry about that. I actually thought I’d written something about how that might happen, but apparently all I did was drop a bunch of “hints” with songs about “the end”, and now I reread my posts, I see that could have been taken the wrong way. My bad!
Anywho I’m back and feel like I have enough time on my hands to tackle a variety of projects, this being one of them. I know that last time I managed to post 5x a week, and while I’d love to pull that off, I may have to lower my standards ever so slightly. I’ll aim for 2, and if I can do more, then hoorays all round! A little like my return (though more acclaimed), I’m posting a band who also dropped off the radar for a number of years. This is Do Make Say Think, a Canadian instrumental band, and if you don’t know of them, then it’s time to rectify that.
“Do Make Say Think has been widely celebrated as one of the preeminent instrumental rock bands of the 90s-00s. Stubborn Persistent Illusions is the group’s first album in eight years – and a stellar addition to one of the most consistent, inventive, exuberant, satisfying, and critically acclaimed discographies in the ‘post-rock’ canon.”
Do Make Say Think – Return, Return Again
Today we have a song from the Danish band Lowly‘s new album Heba. They’ve struck a pleasant balance of dreamy upbeat indie rock, which has a bit of a dark edge to its lyrics. Yay! This is reminding me somewhat of Warpaint‘s self titled album, while the vocals give me flashes of Edie Brickell. All things good.
Lowly – Deer Eyes
Another desk title hits the mark! So I’ve given this song a few listens over the past few days and I’m really liking it. Very atmospheric instrumental stuff, brings to mind Jakob, Hammock, If These Trees Could Talk and a bit of Sembler Deah. I’ve had it on as background music so haven’t given it the attention it deserves, but I intend to, and hope you will. Don’t be fooled by the name, these guys are from Spain and this song is off their upcoming album Solstice.
Astralia – Detachment
I’ve decided the best way of coming up with titles for my posts is to pilfer words from the clutter on my desk. Let’s see how that goes. In other news, here is a song that I should have put up yesterday but completely forgot about. My bad. This is off SOHN‘s latest album Rennen. It’s got the feels! It’s a nice uncluttered sound – simple drum beats, a bit of keyboard with occasional electronic flourishes, and understated vocals. What’s not to like?
SOHN – Signal
While I personally can’t stand the comments of youtube videos, I also have some morbid fascination with reading some of the bile that people put on there. Can’t help myself apparently. It’s not often that I find a comment in youtube that makes me laugh, but the one on this song I found quite entertaining.
~Band starts playing~ “I wish that everyone I knew was dead” ~Band stops playing and gives him dirty looks~
I just like that. Great opening line for a song too =) total class.
Highly Suspect – Serotonia
Looks like these guys have a new album on the horizon, Poison The Parish. Boy sure takes me back hearing them, their songs (Fine Again and Driven Under in particular) from Disclaimer II, sure do take me all the way back to high school. Weird!
Seether – Let You Down
Thursday already? Excellent! Have some of this! The album cover has a dogs mouth on it with that weird pink/brown gum thing they do so well. Plus some teeth, fur, and a little bit of nose. Which could be an adequate way of describing this electronic track. Oh and I should probably mention this is one of the guys from Fuck Buttons, if that’s a further indication of what to expect.
Blanck Mass – Silent Treatment
After my recent post of the Grails song, this band appeared before me who definitely are rocking a bit of a Grails vibe. So I thought I’d share. Mentioned as sounding like Chelsea Wolfe and True Widow (among others), I would be remiss not to give them a listen, and initial results suggest it’s good! Very atmospheric.
Palehorse/Palerider – Sundowning
Hey these guys have a new album out soon, Chalice Hymnal. They do a pretty cool style of Instrumental/Psychedelic with touches of orientalism and 60s/70s vibes. It’s diverse and cool. Some other guy had this to say about the new album:
This record is by turns calming and ambient (“Rebecca”), cerebral and spectral, (“The Moth & the Flame”), meditative and noir cinematic (“After the Funeral”), gnarly, mathy, and kraut rock-tastic (“Pelham”), plus a whole bunch in between. The sounds of a bunch of musicians stretching their limbs and reaching past the horizon. (link)
Grails – Deep Snow II
This is a band that seems to draw a lot of comparisons to Tool, Opeth, and Katatonia, and I can see where these comparisons are coming from, but the band does seem to be their own entity. Their new album Lykaia, definitely seems worth a listen to help tide you over until the next Tool album. I’m digging the part that rolls in around the 4.30 mark on this song, pretty sick.
Soen – Opal
