So here’s the tune I was supposed to put up yesterday but kinda forgot/got lazy. It’s some nitty gritty Instrumetal which will totally go down a treat for your friday. This track has some satisfying ‘djenty’ sounds going on… Gotta say I really don’t like the word ‘djent’ but it is what it is, a term derived from the low tuned sounds of the bass (if I remember rightly). Bonus points on this track is that it has Jakub Zytecki providing some guitaring and soloing.
I’m disappointed to learn (a bit late to the party) that Agalloch has disbanded. There goes yet another of my formative bands, they had some stellar albums in their career and some of the most epic songs. My new theme is “The End” (all the more befitting with Agalloch now gone) and will run for the next 4-5 weeks. Just to forewarn you, as of the beginning of April I won’t be posting with such regularity. I’m changing lifestyle, going travelling, and so don’t know if or when I will have the time to post. I’d still like to put up music when I can, to keep the soundtrack of my life going, and throw mystery bands at you. Fingers crossed. BTW Look beyond the vocal style in this track and listen to the surrounding music, the lyrics, don’t let the vocal growls etc put you off.
Agalloch – In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion
He sounds like a cool guy. Actually this song sounds promising too, I haven’t really got into much of Mastodon‘s stuff over the past few years, but this song off their upcoming album definitely has a bit of a Crack The Skye vibe which I’m liking. I shall anticipate the new albums release with enthusiasm I think.
Mastodon – Sultan’s Curse
Well this seems a befitting tune for the day considering the current weather that’s floating around down here. If you do nothing else but read the titles of this guys album, you’ll be doing yourself a favour. They bring to mind a less serious Red Sparowes. Musically this wee album is bad ass, although the way it’s structured is a bit odd. There are 4 tracks of decent lengths, but within one you might here several different ‘songs’, I’m not sure what to make of that. But just listen to it as a whole and it’s great. Solid Instrumetal.
Cloudkicker – A Weather Front Was Stalled Out In The Pacific – Like A Lonely person, Lost In Thought, Oblivious Of Time
Man it’s not often I have to dig so hard to find a tune, apparently I’m treading obscure musical waters here. Fortunately I remembered spotify so let’s hope the link actually works for you. This is this weeks ‘tidal’ related song, thanks to the lyrics “it’s the motion of the tide”. It was with this band that I realised it never pays to completely discount an album or band. When I first heard it I couldn’t stand it. Quite a few years passed before I stumbled upon them again, gave the album (Metanoia) another listen, and realised that I’d made a huge mistake. It’s actually a pretty great album, full of spastic metal music, and catchy bloody tunes. It was then and there I vowed never to completely discount a musician. Tastes change.
The Human Abstract – Metanoia
First and foremost let me apologise about that image in the video below. Unfortunately this is the only link I can find for this version, though personally I find that ‘paint’ image very distracting. So do me a favour and listen without having the video visible. Anyway today I had a semi-revelation… having been thrashing/binging my way through numerous songs by these guys, and trawling back through their previous albums over the past few months (to my surprise), I realised I just can’t seem to stop listening to their stuff. And while the jury is still not quite unanimous, I’m starting to wonder if this qualifies them as my favourite band… Blimey! I’m selective about the songs I like, but when I like them, boy I like them. So here’s the instrumental version of the final track from their 2011 album One. Of particular enjoyment is that tiny section between 0:50 and 1:02, and that weird ‘clicky’ sound at about 3:32. Just, you know, so you can enjoy those bits too…
TesseracT – Eden (Instrumental version)
If you like it, check out the version with vocals too for a comparison.
I hinted at something dark for tonight’s post. Well this song is a little dark, certainly a bit grim sounding, and ridiculously epic. It deserves your attention. I recommend really getting down to the nitty gritty with this and having a good ear bash. This is a song by Agalloch off their 2010 album Marrow Of The Spirit. I’ve been a fan of these guys for as long as I can remember, though sadly I don’t listen to them so much these days. They pull off a pretty damn unique sound so keep an open mind and approach with gusto!
