Hard to dislike a band who blatantly puns their own name for a track title. I mean, come on! A bit of a garage rock, stoner/psychedelic thing going on. From what I’ve read on their bandcamp page, people are pretty happy with the album, so I think I’ll need to give this album a proper listen. This song Tide Alarms, is my ‘tide’ themed song for the week, off Tidal Arms self titled album. Enjoy the weekend!
This weeks ‘Tidal’ themed tune is by the ambient/electronic artist Loscil. This track has a lot more energy than his previous stuff, possibly reflective of his new album, though I can’t say for sure as I haven’t yet listened to it. I probably should. It’s…
Loscil – Red Tide
I’m pretty sure ol’ Damon Albarn is up there for one of the most prolific artists around. This is one of his side projects, The Good, The Bad And The Queen, a collaborative effort with Danger Mouse and a couple other fellas. It’s a great album, got a real good chill-out vibe, though I do feel like playing poker and walking around the Wellington waterfront after listening to it. Incidentally, this song is the Tide track for the week: “In a tide end town”. Lots of intriguing noise nuances on the album, good for headphones is what I’m saying.
The Good, The Bad And The Queen – Northern Whale
Oh yeah. I punned it. In compensation, here is this weeks ‘tide’ tune, a minimal old school number by Talk Talk. This is off the 1991 album Laughing Stock which generally makes for a pretty nice evening listen. Definitely worthy of a sipping wine and low light. Kinda gentle jazz. This song has the lyrics “And still to rise beyond the tide”. Tide…
Talk Talk – Taphead
Here you go chap. An ambient song with an unarguable tie to ‘Tide’. This is the last track off ASC‘s 2014 album, Truth Be Told. This is mellow stuff but full of sounds and noises and mischievous pieces of familiarity in there. Definitely a headphone listen. Think Circular blended with The Flashbulb, with just a splash of Loscil for good measure.
ASC – The Certainty Of Tides
Man it’s not often I have to dig so hard to find a tune, apparently I’m treading obscure musical waters here. Fortunately I remembered spotify so let’s hope the link actually works for you. This is this weeks ‘tidal’ related song, thanks to the lyrics “it’s the motion of the tide”. It was with this band that I realised it never pays to completely discount an album or band. When I first heard it I couldn’t stand it. Quite a few years passed before I stumbled upon them again, gave the album (Metanoia) another listen, and realised that I’d made a huge mistake. It’s actually a pretty great album, full of spastic metal music, and catchy bloody tunes. It was then and there I vowed never to completely discount a musician. Tastes change.
The Human Abstract – Metanoia
Ok this may be too soon for the new theme, and I probably won’t do this again… but part of life is finding sneaky misdirections, soooooo for this weeks ‘Tide’ song I’m going to use a homophone. The song is Tied My Hands by Saron Gas. It’s been a long, long time since I listened to this. I found it right at the start of a spiral into depression as a young lad and I daresay it did not help my mental state. Pretty sure it doesn’t actually have anything to do with bondage haha. Saron Gas later went on to become Seether who you might have heard of…
Saron Gas – Tied My Hands
Also I just found out that these guys used ‘Saron’ as a homophone for ‘Sarin’, that’s a funny little coincidence.
